The Mad Kobold King is a Fifth Edition adventure designed for three to five 1st- to 2nd-level characters and is optimized for four characters with an average party level (APL) of 1. The dungeon is setting agnostic, meaning it can easily be incorporated into any setting that has kobolds and mines. The characters stumble into the long-abandoned Smuggler's Run and discover that it’s been taken over by an eccentric and haughty kobold by the name of Dak Graychew. Armed with rudimentary magics and a curious little trinket, Dak rules over his kobold kingdom with an iron fist.
A smuggler's run is a crucial transportation tool for certain criminal elements in the region. Each of these tunnels allows for the conveyance of goods to and from a specific location without interference by the local authorities. Though many such “runs” exist in the world today, this one has long been abandoned.
Unbeknownst to all involved, the earth of this smuggler’s run was riddled with a black crystalline metal notorious for inducing madness in the living after long periods of exposure. Those working in the run had no way of knowing, of course, and succumbed to the metal’s influence; once it became clear that something was driving these people to commit murder, the run was permanently shuttered and forgotten.
In the interim years after the run’s closure, a group of kobolds took up residence there, finding the dark and dry environs agreeable to their sensitive constitution. Led by one called Dak Graychew, the kobolds managed to carve out a comfortable existence within the tunnels. Unfortunately for them, this peace would not last forever; their kingdom was doomed as soon as Dak discovered the crystal orb. The orb whispered secrets and cruelties into the dragonkin’s ear, stirring within him grandiose delusions and deep malice toward his compatriots. Though the trinket did grant Dak Graychew meager magical ability, it did not grant him the sound mind to rule. Nevertheless, he now sits on his throne of refuse, a tyrant who lords over all with a tiny, iron fist. Won’t anyone end the mad dragonkin’s reign?
