This alien race seems to have humanoid-looking emissaries to contact with other intelligent races, but their true appearance is quite disturbing. Various monsters and their tamed beasts using whatever technologies they can get, starting from clubs and axes and finishing with hi-tech energy weapons. That can be very usefull for your sci-fi adventure.
