The fort of Xotalanc is a defensive structure built from mossy brick walls and hardened clay, designed to withstand both armed assaults and the encroaching jungle. Its round walls are steeply sloped and reinforced with stucco, reducing erosion and making them difficult to scale. Narrow firing slits along the walls provide cover for archers and a way to fire at attackers, while raised platforms at each corner serve as watchtowers, offering visibility over the jungle and nearby river.
A moat, fed by diverting water from the nearby croc-infested lake, surrounds the fort. The flowing water prevents tunneling and impedes direct assaults. Fish and amphibians thrive in the waters, but so do crocodiles and venomous serpents, adding another layer of natural defense. A single causeway, constructed from wooden palisades, provides controlled access to the main gate, which remains heavily guarded by warriors of the Tirik’Yaku, one of the Chultan warrior clans.
Inside, the fort contains essential infrastructure for long-term occupation. Granaries store dried maize and cassava, while rooftop gardens supplement food supplies with herbs and medicinal plants. A central courtyard serves as a training ground and a site for ritual observances dedicated to Ubtau, with ceremonial carvings set into the stone. Clay-lined cisterns collect rainwater, ensuring a steady supply even during dry seasons or sieges.
