A wagon is blocking the road. Is this wagon abandoned? Is it a point of a mystery? Maybe some travellers need help? One thing is for sure: If the players want to pass they need to figure some way out, they could just go arround or loot the vehicle, help or steal from the wagon's owners or whatever else you can come up with!
The upcoming crossroads is blocked by a small structure surrounded by barricades. Is it a military checkpoint? Perhaps hunters or bandits. If your players decide to break through they will be forced to be withing the tight walls of the sunken dirt road.
As your party is going through the forest there's a chance they can see and find a roughly hidden ladder that leads to a camp of travelers that are in hiding, why are they hiding? Maybe there's a rise in bandits or they are runaway convicts... or they are not travelers at all and your players are ambushed from this hidden camp.
The road ends up being extremely narrow and hard to move through. This is the perfect place to surprise your adventurers with an encounter that proves difficult not necessarily in power but in movement and other space-related restrictions.
Your team stumbles upon an old, practically fully destroyed ruin of something that looks like maybe it could have been a guard house or perhaps a hunter's outpost. It is of course unusable after years of neglect, but it might provide your team with a prime camping spot.
