In times past, Bish was a thriving town located at the great causeway over the inlet of the Flue River into Lake Bish and extending up the main river valley to the North. The mage-engineers in those times were great builders who took pride in shaping the land to suit their needs and the needs of their people. They cut through the hills to keep the highway flat, built a huge dam several Kilomiles up stream to provide power and water all year round and created great tombs upon the hills to memorialize their own glory...
Time passed. ... The old techniques were forgotten or taken for granted. The dam broke and the resultant flood changed the landscape downstream, washing out the causeway in several places and washing away the town of Bish. Those that survived, moved away.
The flood also happened to wash through the greenhouse of a certain Mage-gardener, washing away a great many interesting experiments. One seed found purchase in this valley and grew into a mighty tree. Over the centuries, branches occasionally broke off, washing downstream to find places of their own to grow, forming what is now a grove of unusually large trees.
Eventually, Swamp-folk moved in, attracted by the grove of trees, their welcoming shade and fibrous leaves. They built leaky fish-trap weirs that eventually silted up and became small dams. The first & largest tree, now hollowing out, became the sacred heart of their small scattered hamlet.
More recently, traders started to visit the area again. River-folk and farmers have followed. They are more populous and have built docks, trade warehouses, and started up ferry & wagon-swapping services for travelers passing through. They have also started to use (raid and then re-use) the ancient Tombs again. Overall, the new folk of Beeshé Crossing and Súnend get along well with the Swamp-folk of Westsong Grove, except that they are not permitted to visit the Great-tree uninvited...
