Welcome to the Gladbrook House, a 5 floor swamp estate containing a terrible secret in its basement. The basement/dungeon is completely hidden, leaving the narrative pacing up to the GM to reveal it only when the time is right.
A favorite scenario of mine involves the Heroes coming to grips with the realization that they bit off more than they could handle and thus fleeing from the horrors within, up through each level of the mansion, and eventually escaping through the loft windows!
As stated previously, the sub-level is hidden from view, and can only be accessed by a trapdoor in the kitchen. This can be the final act (think of your favorite horror movie), where nightmares become reality.
Once in the basement, its dank storage cellar leads ever downward to a partially flooded area. A glowing coffin hides in the shadows of the staircase and an ominous crypt door at the opposite end opens to reveal a sacrificial altar.
Think its over? The crumbled foundation reveals a dark network of swampy caves all which lead to an ancient sarcophagus. The haunting mural is caked in fresh blood and adorned with human skulls. It is here that the ultimate evil lurks. Now, the Heroes must decide to fight or flee. The possibilities are endless!
