Scales of Retribution

Brave the swamp's depths to balance the scales of kobold justice...

Scales of Retribution is a Fifth Edition adventure for three to five characters of 3rd to 4th level, optimized for four characters with an average party level (APL) of 3. When the mines of Blackstone Crossing are sabotaged by vengeful kobolds, a band of adventurers must navigate the treacherous Hillsmere Bowels and breach the walls of Witherbog Keep to unravel a web of corruption and injustice. Along the way, they must decide between bloody retribution or uneasy redemption.

This adventure takes place in the Freelands campaign setting and can be adapted to any campaign that has a ruined keep in a swamp with a few name changes.

About this Adventure

In this gripping D&D adventure, players venture into the treacherous Hillsmere Bowels to confront the unforeseen consequences of corruption and exploitation. The story unfolds at Darkshard Mine, near Blackstone Crossing, where the Doralli Mining Company secretly enslaved kobolds for labor. The revelation of this injustice incites Krazzix Sharpclaw, a kobold warlord, to lead a daring raid, resulting in the capture of miners, including the company's foreman, Eamon Cragjaw.

The adventurers' journey takes them through perilous landscapes to Witherbog Keep, an ancient, decaying fortress now occupied by Krazzix's kobold insurgents and the ogre brothers Magrath and Jimbo. The keep, bristling with traps and guarded by vigilant sentries, poses a formidable challenge. Here, the players must navigate the complex moral landscape of the conflict, choosing between rescuing the miners, confronting Krazzix, and unravelling the truth behind the mine's operation.
