For this map he decided to cross the river but not as simple as that seems, I decided to include several elements in the river so that crossing can be more interesting.
In the first place I decided to add a small cliff of falling water which you can use as an entrance to another map or simply as a place of fall for some enemy that you have defeated.
The depth of the water can be decided by you since the cliffs are usually a vertical representation that has nothing to do with the grid. So you can decide if the river is deep or not. So that influences the way of crossing.
Personally I imagined it as a river of a depth not so high but capable of covering an average man up to the waist.
In this way the water can influence the direction of movement of your characters by slowly dragging them towards the cliff having to have a fight a little more interesting and fast moving.
Also add a giant rock in the river from which you can attack enemies that have submerged in the water using electric attacks or any attack that makes opponents who are touching water vulnerable.
And finally I decided to add a cave in a rock which you can use as a kind of chamber or vault in which you can find some treasures or as a step towards some dungeon.
This map has a 36x24 grid
All variations have a gridded and gridless version.
