From almost anywhere in Yurai, the castle can be seen rising above the bay. It stands upon its own island north of the city, separated from the crowded streets by a stretch of pale blue water and several layers of walls. Once, this castle was the centre around which Yurai revolved. Today it remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city. However, the real heart of Yurai lies beyond its Old Town, among the markets, guild halls, warehouses, shrines and merchant residences that have grown around the old military settlement. What began as a fortified town has become the great trading centre of Dorakuro, and one of the few places in Makayoto where merchants can claim to rival samurai in both wealth and influence.
Along the River Syne lies the picturesque town of Merrisant. From far away, the towers of the Palace of the Comte can already be seen rising above the landscape, with pointed roofs covered in purple tiles and golden spires gleaming in the sunlight. As one approaches the town, the rest of Merrisant slowly takes shape, and the church towers, watchtowers, and countless rooftops become recognizable. The surrounding countryside is covered by a patchwork of vineyards, fields, and farms, constantly accompanied by the pleasant murmuring of the River Syne.
