Ministry of Portals Pt1

Description

"The concierge met us in the main hall as expected. He greeted us with all the cheer you would expect from a salesman eager to finalize a deal.

“Thank you for coming, each of you!” He beamed, his voice strong and friendly. “Your donation to the Ministry was highly generous, and we’d be happy to provide you a tour as requested. I’m sure you’d like to know how your investment is being used.”

As we were paraded through the hallway listening to the concierge’s chipper voice explaining the mundane operation, the boss gave me the signal. Nearly instantly, I ducked into a small alcove and donned my cloak of camouflage. Not foolproof, but at least I would be harder to spot by the wandering eye.

I followed the directions to the archives as quickly as I could, finally reaching the locked room. A quick incantation, and the clunk of the bolt falling back was all I needed to hear.

Once inside, I quickly shuffled through the portal diagrams. Most outlined instructions to open gateways to nearly every major city. While valuable, it was not what we came here for.

Finally I spotted a shelf further up, labeled “Prohibited”. “This must be it!” I thought to myself.

With these diagrams in hand, I could barely believe what I was seeing, let alone our luck! These gateways led to dozens of high profile banks and prisons, places you wouldn’t want people to be able to slip in and out. The diagrams themselves were priceless, but the power they could give someone… No wonder we were paid so handsomely.

A thought crossed my mind and my stomach sank. This power, in the wrong hands, this could be too much. What if this job is the beginning of a terrible catastrophe?"
