Cistercian Numerals, or Cistercian Cyphers, have a long and complicated history dating back to the early 13th century. They represent numbers, in the range of 1 to 9,999 and are very compact, yet very awkward to do mathematics with. First introduced to Europe at around the same time as the Arabic Numerals (i.e. 0-9) were beginning to replace Roman Numerals as the de-facto standard way to write numbers.
Whilst impractical for doing mathematics with, they've got a great deal of use as a system for simply numbering things in fantasy or sci-fi settings, and because most players won't understand them at first, they're also great for use in puzzles, which can also teach players a little real-world history in the process. There are a number of variations on the scheme, but this pack represents the most commonly found modern interpretation of the values, along with a common variation on the glyphs for 6, 60, 600, and 6,000.
