Three burial mounds – The Barrows – are shown herein. Unsure where to start? Here's one way to begin...
Come gather round, young ones and old,
For I tell the tale of a kingdom untold.
Long it stood upon this hallowed ground,
Ruled by a man, his head crowned.
Rich were the lands, in wheat and herd,
Its people did flourish, much wealth incurred.
None more so than the noble lord,
His prosperity was legend, treasures in horde.
But his time would come, this he knew,
Death would reach him when his life was through.
Three sons he had, to carry his name,
His wealth he would split and thus his domain.
Each heir would be charged to defend the land,
As brothers three, united would stand.
A bond in blood before the king was sworn,
Three brothers in concert, a pact was born.
When at last the old king died, to many a wail,
His soul it did pass, beyond the last veil.
But before his body was cold, the brothers did split,
Upon each other, grievous wrongs they did commit.
The years they did pass, bringing nothing but war,
The blood of many, across the Kingdom did pour.
As warriors fell, too many to count,
The three brothers were the last standing to hold account.
By sword, shield and helm, the brother did fight,
Not a one would step back, not a one take flight.
For their hearts were dark, and knew nought but greed,
Caring not for what they had agreed.
By each others hands they would meet their fate,
Their bodies sealed in tombs, to contain their hate.
And what of the treasure, they fought so hard for?
It was buried along with them, or so goes the lore.
Waiting in darkness for one to unite,
What the brother’s three, battle with each night.
And the tombs that hold such sorrow and woe,
Of oaths taken and broken so long ago?
Where they stand is but the flight of an arrow,
The cursed hills beyond the river, that we call The Barrow.
