A Level 1 Murder-Mystery One-Shot for the Gats & Grimoires Playtest
Everybody knew Daiquiri.
Beautiful, popular, and always welcome in the right clubs, she was the kind of dame who could walk into a room and make half the city forget what they were talking about.
Now she's dead.
Somebody put two bullets in the city's favorite singer and left her bleeding in an alley right behind the Crew's own joint. The U-Men are already crawling over the neighborhood, the cops are locking down the streets, and every minute the Crew wastes gives the government another reason to decide they did it.
They didn't.
Probably.
Somebody is lying.
Everybody has something to hide.
And if the Crew follows the wrong lead for too long, they might start a gang war before they ever find the killer.
Built for Roll20

The package includes:
- Complete NPC Sheets — Major characters, witnesses, law enforcement, gangsters, and combatants are ready for play.
- Fully Prepared Battle Maps — Crime scenes, city streets, hospital interiors, the Velvet Moon nightclub, Cinder Company territory, and more.
- Dynamic Lighting — Maps are prepared for atmospheric exploration, sight lines, doors, rooms, and tactical encounters.
- Player Handouts — Important items, portraits, and cinematic illustrations help bring the investigation to life.
- Cutscene Artwork — Major moments throughout the mystery have dedicated Gats & Grimoires illustrations.
- Investigation Clues & Alternate Paths — Important evidence appears through multiple routes so one bad roll doesn't bring the mystery to a halt.
- Ready-to-Run Encounters — Social scenes, investigations, infiltration, chases, and gunfights are prepared for the Don.
- Five Pregenerated Goons — Jump directly into the adventure without character creation.
Pregenerated Characters
Barnabas — A hard-hitting street operator ready to solve problems the old-fashioned way.
Deranger — A sharp-dressed Sea Elf packing a Vest-Pocket Pistol, a Stiletto, and enough style to make trouble look respectable.
Montic — A Black Carnival Jester with a Gallery Pistol, Billy Club, and the sort of smile that makes sensible people check where the exits are.
Nork — A Goblin built for the dirty work that keeps a Crew alive when a Job stops going according to plan.
Olga — A Human mage bringing supernatural muscle to a city where bullets and magic are equally likely to ruin somebody's evening.
The Crew are mobsters.
They can bribe witnesses, lean on suspects, sneak past cops, steal evidence, break into restricted rooms, bluff their way through a building, or solve problems with a revolver when diplomacy quits working.
The city reacts accordingly.
Every Scene gives the Crew room to choose how they investigate, while redundant clues keep the case moving even when plans fail spectacularly.
Because in Gats & Grimoires, failure shouldn't stop the story.
It should make the story worse.
Jazz. Magic. Tommy Guns. Murder.
Back Alley Chalkline is an introduction to the world of Gats & Grimoires: a Jazz-Age fantasy city where organized crime, firearms, magic, fantasy peoples, corrupt institutions, nightclubs, industrial rackets, and supernatural trouble all share the same rain-slick streets.
