Beneath sealed stone and layered sigils lies a forgotten vault once used for void research by the Astral Academy. Its architect, the drow researcher Vaelor Ren, vanished after pushing containment systems beyond their limits, leaving behind a structure that reacts, adapts, and corrects intruders with cold precision. As the vault’s mechanisms awaken, the adventurers must navigate interconnected chambers, decipher layered puzzles, and uncover fragments of research that hint at experiments meant to observe the Void itself. The deeper they go, the clearer it becomes that the vault was not only built to contain something, but to test how long control could be maintained.
Vault of Starless Design is a puzzle-focused dungeon adventure built around interconnected systems, environmental logic, and controlled escalation. The vault reacts to player decisions through visible cause and effect, rewarding observation, coordination, and deduction rather than brute force alone. As the party progresses, they uncover fragments of void research that reveal how containment protocols evolved, failed, and adapted over time.
The adventure blends exploration, problem-solving, and combat as consequence rather than default. Puzzles build on shared logic instead of introducing isolated mechanics, allowing players to learn how the vault functions and apply that understanding under increasing pressure. The experience culminates in a sudden, dangerous confrontation that breaks the puzzle rhythm and forces the party to deal with what prolonged containment was never meant to hold.
Vault of Starless Design is a 5th edition, level 7 puzzle-heavy adventure set in the Starlight Chronicles. Designed for 1 to 2 sessions (4 to 6 hours), it uses a single large battlemap and layered mechanics inspired by escape rooms and procedural systems. It features interconnected puzzles, optional pressure mechanics, scalable difficulty, and a climactic boss encounter born from failed void containment. Ideal for groups that enjoy deduction, coordination, and adventures where understanding the environment matters as much as combat.
This adventure can be adapted to your own campaign, played as a one-shot, or be part of the Starlight Chronicles setting that connects everything made by Kelfecil's Tales.
