Behold Adventurers, welcome to the Arena!
The day's games are about to begin!
The arena stands in all its martial glory, a temple to combat and entertainment in equal measures. The air is abuzz with the excitement of the crowds and the musk of adrenaline wafting up from the combatants below. Cheers echo off the ancient stone work as people pound their feet against the floorboards in time to the clashing of steel. On his throne, beneath the protective awning of his pavilion, the ruler of the city sits as spectator and judge while a train of warriors is fed to the games from the two opposing gates. Occasionally, a particularly rousing cheer erupts from the crowd when exotic beasts appear from the third gate, for there lies the truly spectacular, from tigers, to ogres, and, on the rare occasion, a dragon.
The Arena comes with a dizzying array of encounter opportunities, within the fighting arena, through the stands, or in amongst the concourse shops and taverns. But if one is looking for subtly and infiltration, start in the sewers and make your way up through the hypogeum, where gladiators and beasts await the games.
Adventure hooks are readily available within this location, such as placing your players in the role of contestants fighting in the ring for the amusement of the crowds. Might they try to escape?
The hypogeum is host to a myriad of cells with accommodating dimensions up to huge creatures. Could players be there to rescue an imprisoned dragon, forced to fight?
The city leader often visits these games, and is most vulnerable in his booth, if one knows hidden ways to approach.
Not only spectators peruse the concourse shops and taverns, but thieves and bandits as well. Have they arrived to disrupt the games? Or perhaps use the confusion to mask some nefarious dealings? Might you interfere or benefit?
With six levels, 4 atmospheric variations, and a myriad of locational highlights, this map set can be used time and time again.
