Mummies: Species Variants is a monster supplement for 5e that presents mummies as preserved remains of many different peoples rather than a single desert-bound archetype. Instead of treating mummies as culturally identical undead, this book explores how burial practices and physical heritage shape the undead that rise from ancient tombs.
The intent of this product is mechanical clarity and encounter variety without CR inflation. Every creature in this supplement uses the standard SRD mummy framework—retaining Dreadful Glare, Rotting Fist, and the Mummy Rot curse—while modifying only size, movement, languages, and a single preserved racial trait. The result is a wide range of recognizable undead guardians that remain mechanically consistent with the original mummy design.
These mummies are not roaming conquerors or battlefield commanders. They are tomb guardians bound by funerary rites, lingering curses, and ancient burial traditions. Each variant reflects the body and environment it was preserved in: drowned temples, swamp shrines, labyrinth crypts, giant necropolises, and more.
Cultural lore is intentionally minimal. Whether these undead are the result of sacred preservation, necromantic catastrophe, forgotten burial cults, or divine punishment is left to the GM. Use these stat blocks as tools. Why these bodies were preserved—and why they still walk—is yours to decide.
