Antfolk expands the familiar “insect swarm” concept into a disciplined imperial hive built for structured, formation-based encounters in 5e play. Rather than treating ant-like creatures as mindless monsters or a single scalable stat block, this supplement presents a complete society ladder—from vulnerable larval brood and labor castes to hardened veterans, battlefield officers, and a sovereign queen—each designed to fulfill a clear tactical and narrative role at the table.
Whether you need organized tunnel defenders holding a chokepoint, expendable shock troops absorbing the first assault, elite myrmidons executing flanking maneuvers, or a hive marshal coordinating layered formations, Antfolk provides mechanically distinct stat blocks across multiple tiers of play. The ladder is built to scale naturally, allowing encounters to evolve from disciplined patrol engagements into full colony assaults where command structure, positioning, and formation integrity determine the outcome.
Each antfolk type emphasizes hierarchy, cohesion, and purpose. Abilities focus on shield formations, pheromone-marked targets, controlled retreats, layered command bonuses, and disciplined sacrifice rather than chaos or individual heroics. Antfolk do not panic—they reorganize. They do not scatter—they fall back in layers. Killing officers matters. Breaking formation matters. Confronting the Queen changes everything.
Use Antfolk as subterranean empire-builders, territorial expansionists, tunnel-fortifying defenders, or structured military antagonists whose strength lies in order, not rage. The hierarchy is provided. How far their empire spreads is up to you.
Antfolk Larval Brood (CR 0): Protected young of the hive. Noncombatant but triggers defensive aggression and reinforces the stakes of brood chambers and colony survival.
Antfolk Worker (CR 0): Labor caste responsible for tunneling, fortification, and supply. Armed with simple tools or spears and fights only under direct command.
Antfolk Scout (CR 1/8): Agile recon unit that marks targets with pheromones, tracks by scent, and withdraws to draw enemies into prepared positions.
Antfolk Drone (CR 1/4): Expendable shock trooper bred for assault. Relies on natural claws and venom and willingly sacrifices itself to preserve hierarchy.
Antfolk Legionary (CR 1/2): Standard shield infantry armed with sword and shield. Advances methodically and holds formation under officer presence.
Antfolk Veteran (CR 1): Hardened frontline soldier with shield-wall discipline and battlefield experience. Absorbs punishment without hesitation.
Antfolk Shield Captain (CR 2): Formation officer who stabilizes lines, reinforces cohesion, and prevents disorder within proximity.
Antfolk Myrmidon (CR 3): Elite assault specialist armed with heavy or dual weapons. Executes flanking maneuvers and eliminates priority threats.
Antfolk Hive Marshal (CR 5): Battlefield commander who coordinates multiple formations, enhances hive coordination, and directs tactical repositioning.
Antfolk Queen (CR 8): Sovereign ruler of the colony. Central authority of expansion and defense whose presence strengthens all ranks—and whose fall fractures the hive.
